What a Strange Trip
Spencer's Week Off cont...
By Eddie Buck
Wednesday morning, we woke up to sunny skies, not as cold as Santa Fe the morning before. We were ready to eat the tires off the truck, we were so hungry. There was a little touristy type diner across the lot from the hotel. We had a nice breakfast, roamed around the gift shop and then pointed it in the direction of Las Vegas, with a planned stop at Hoover Dam. We negotiated the twists and turns with the trailer, to get to the dam and were excited to cross. The ranger guides us into the lane, to inspect us, the truck and trailer... or so we thought. He informed us we couldn't cross, due to the Ed not having windows. He told us we could park it off-site and come back. Well, no one in their right mind would park a vintage trailer, full of dragster 1300 miles away from home and leave it. So, we did the next best thing, we drove up the hill to the observation point and looked out over Lake Mead.
We spent close to 45 minutes, looking around, taking pictures and watching some rat looking squirrels. Next stop was Vegas. Spencer had never been there and was curious about what it was like. Another adventure in parking, was in a fairly empty public lot. I was able to squeeze the Beast and the Ed up against the edge of the lot. Spencer wasn't real impressed with Fremont Street Experience and was less amused at the antics of the people. We found a place to eat and made quick work of getting back to the truck. Heading out to Bakersfield and the CHRR was our goal. We made our hotel about 7 pm and found a Panda Express, settled into our room and were finally able to rest. The next day was the beginning of the Reunion.
This will be my last column for the indefinite future. Life sometimes gets in the way of the fun and a break is in order for me. I hope to come back around eventually, but, I'm really just not sure at this time. I want to thank everyone who has read my ramblings, and let me know about it. If you see me out at a show or event, say hello. I want to thank Rob for asking me to and letting me do this. I always idolized guys like Baskerville, Burnham and the offbeat. I got to do it and enjoyed it. See ya around and So long
