Jones Clinches 2015 Outlaw Fuel Altered Championship
By Chris Graves
The 19th season of Painless Performance Products Outlaw Fuel Altered competition brought a heated battle to the season finale at North Star Dragway in Denton, Texas. Two former Champions, Jimmy Jones "Texas Tremor" and Donnie Massey's "Showtime" entered the last race of the season just ten points apart in the standings. Jones, a three time series Champion from 2011 through 2013, kicked off this season with back to back wins, but through the summer and fall events, lost the consistency his team is known for in their feared blown alcohol entry. Massey enjoyed a Championship winning campaign in 2002 and was in his first title contention in over a decade in the "Showtime" nitro burner, earning that position with three final round appearances in a row and two wins heading into the final event on Halloween night in North Texas.
Qualifying position is a critical factor in the series points system, but both drivers failed to produce impressive numbers as they found themselves on the bottom half of the field heading into eliminations. In the pits, Massey's team discovered a clutch problem which shockingly ended their Championship bid as he was unable to make the call for first round. Jones locked up the title by simply appearing in the first round, where he blew the tires off at the hit and had the best seat in the house to watch eventual event winner John Broussard blast to a 3.99 at 181 mph. Despite their first round loss, the Jones & Kelly "Texas Tremor" team celebrated their fourth Outlaw Fuel Altered Championship in the past five years and will sleep easy over the off-season knowing the pressure is off, until next spring when the points will re-set and the battle will start all over again in this highly competitive series.
The OFAA series will celebrate it's 20th Anniversary in 2016 and is anticipating another fun filled season of racing across the southwest. Chatter in the pits indicate three new teams joining the mix as the nation's longest lasting fuel altered series gears up for a historic season. The Outlaw Fuel Altered Association would like to thank title sponsor Painless Performance Parts and bonus program sponsors Good Vibrations Motorsports and Competition Sales of Dallas for their continued support of the series. OFAA racers would like to recognize and thank Bobby & Nancy Marriott for their twenty years of passion and dedication to the series. For more information visit www.ofaa.net.
