The 2014 World Fuel Altered Nationals

Eddyville Raceway is the home of the World Fuel Altered Nationals, held every year on the third weekend in August. This is a stellar event, featuring a field of altereds seeking this coveted championship. In addition to the altereds, the raceway hosted a huge field of sportsman racers and a group of nostalgia gassers that always put on a great show.
The raceway opened in 1965, and was totally rebuilt with a much larger pit area and modern amenities in 1993. It is an IHRA sanctioned 1/8-mile track. Under the management of Gerald Kramer, this Eddyville, Iowa facility knows how to host such an event. And this year was no exception, with rain and drizzle canceling the Friday program, delaying the start of the Saturday program until early evening, and forcing the program into the Sunday rain date for the championship elimination rounds.
After some hard-charging qualifying rounds, the top of the A Field found Jimmy Young in the Crop Duster altered leading the pack. The B Field top qualifier was Anthony Whitfied in Mighty Mouse. Final eliminations were completed on Sunday, with Roger “Radar” Lechtenberg in the Nitro Madness car defeating Howard Knowles in Cheaper Than Therapy for the A Field championship. Lechtenberg ran a 3.88 at 187.66 mph. For the B Field championship, it was Anthony Whitfield in Mighty Mouse over Mike Allison in the Hot Rod From Hell altered. Whitfield ran a 4.33 at 162.87 to take the win.
Anytime you have a field of fuel altereds on a track as nice as Eddyville Raceway, this is a must-see event. Nostalgia Drag World magazine will be there next year!
