2013 CALIFORNIA HOT ROD REUNION cont...
Through the Eyes of Veteran Nostalgia Racer Stormy Byrd
While it was the veteran fuel racer Jim Murphy that was crowned the series Top Fuel Champion in was the new generation veteran Adam “Sork” Sorokin who took home the trophy in Bobby McLennan’s Champion Speed Shop “Bat Mobile” over old pro Denver “Shooter” Schutz , all the while lifting the blower, side panels and shredding other assorted pieces on route to the stripe as Denver crossed the centerline.
To win this one was special for Adam as his heritage was bred at Bakersfield. It was Adam’s Dad “Iron Mike” back in 1966 that would take home the coveted March Meet title with the legendary “Surfers”. It was a time when 3 guys from Santa Monica figured out the riddles of the universe & how the alignments of the planets affected nitromethane inside the cylinders of a passenger car’s 392 that once hauled the family to church. It was a time when it was more than just a symbiotic relationship with man & machine, it was a time when they became as one while on Bako’s “Asphalt Wasteland “.
What can you say about the funny cars? They were there in masses with Tim Nemeth in his 77 Firebird leading the group with a stout 5.69 @253+, but in the end it was John Hale in the Mike Burkhart tribute Camaro taking the victory over the very consistent and Dangerous Dan Horan & his flying Mustang for the F/C title . Hale showed what a class act he is as he shared the winners circle with 2013 F/C Champion Jason Rupert.
New to the CHRR were the “Pro Mods” some say they’re not nostalgic however when you have a 60’s Chevy with a Brad motor on alky running as fast as the Nitro Funny cars all the while shifting gears it sorta puts a chink in the F/C contingents armor don’t ya think? 16 showed up to do battle! This years inaugural winner was Dan Myers from Ramona CA with his 69 Camaro running 5.95 @ 250+ over runner up Tim Krupa of Valencia CA in his 53 Corvette’s 6.67 @ 229+.
A/Fuel was lead by “The Doc’ Kin Bates however it was Ryan Davenport who’s 6.25 put the Doc on the stretcher in the final round with a 6.25 To Bates stumbling 6.93, however the Doc had the points to claim the title of Grand Poobah of A/F for 2013.
7.0 Pro which is comprised by some of the wildest cars going had a huge contingency of teams shooting for the illustrious CHRR bad ass title. One of the best hands down has to be that of Ron Huggli in his Tiki Warrior BB/FC and his full track burnouts, then running 7.0’s to boot! In the end it was my buddy Mike Smith in the Team Crower car of Zimmerman - Smith-Scott with the help of Back up Babe Leeann Stover and fresh off their victory at The Nation Hot Rod Reunion in Bowling Green Kentucky in 7.0 Pro. A nicer bunch you will not find in all of drag racing and they do it for the love of another gentleman pioneer of the sport, Bruce Crower of Crower Cam fame. In the 7.0 Pro “B Field” (because of so many great cars) it was the return of former champ Richard Phillips in the family’s re-popped 7.0 Bantam Altered taking the win over a breaking Dewayne Sanders.
Nostalgia Eliminator: By far my favorite class (no prejudice there). While the points leader Mark Whynaught lead the tight field and was ultimately awarded the series Champion over three other drivers that could have snagged it from him as points were that close to the wire. In the end it was NHRA Heritage Series & ANRA Series racer Jason Barta in the Barta –Coburn NE1 dragster that the legendary Roger Coburn was part of. Jason took home the trophy over my buddy and fierce competitor Alan Hull when he went a tad too quick 7.60 to a 7.56. Roger I’m sure is smiling down from heaven knowing his car made the winners circle again.
A/Gas had a more then full house with over 22 cars trying the make the field.
Very close coming into the A/Gas Championship were Chris Beanes – Dean Hall & Terry Newton shooting for the year end title. Beans came in @ 3rd behind Hall. Newton & Hall met in roud one ending Newton’s hopes then Beanes disposed of Hall as he picked his way to the winners circle with his bitchin primer black Henry-J humper…
B/Gas had quite the turn out with eventual winner John Saliani who scored wins at both The March Meet & Nostalgia Reunion at Sacramento earlier in the and onto taking the B/Gas Championship for 2013
The A/FX class was takin by Mitchell Akers from San Diego in his 60 Chevy over Michael McCallum from Grand Junction Colorado in his 63 Dodge 400
Jr. Fuel saw old veteran Don Enriquez nail the snoozing JD Zink on a hole-shot and take the title with a 7.20 over Zinks much quicker 6.89!
Hot Rod eliminator saw a bunch of possible winners for the class year end title. Dan Cargil of Bullhead City, AZ was leading the group coming into the reunion with Kurt Kaemeale of Redondo beach CA on his heels. Kaemeale however gave it away on a red light while on the title hunt and gave Cargil the room he needed to stay ahead in the points and become the 2013 Hot Rod Champ.
The Awful Awful’s that graced Bako’s 1320 were a sight to behold.
Boyd in the Wing vs Bradford’s Fiat. Randy took the 1st round then raced Ron Hope in the Rat Trap…What a race! Hope’s wheel standing antics nets a kick ass 6.35 @ 219 with son Brian’s tune-up to Randy’s all time best of 6.54 @227 !!! More wild runs were made with Pure Hell vs Rat Trap. Unfortunately, Pure Hell wounded it’s bullet. Pure Heaven III made laps with Chris “Monkey Boy” Bennett getting acquainted with his heavenly ride. Cal & Les Jackson’s High Heaven AA/FA lovingly restored by Hughie & Shawn Callen who also own it the famed AA/FA had Shawn in the seat laying down a stout 6.65 @ 215+.
