July 5th-7th marked the second annual Area 41 Drags. Named for the track, US 41 Dragway, the race is a throwback to the vintage days of drag racing and a reunion for those that raced and attended US 30 dragstrip (being that is only about 45 minutes south of the famed dragstrip). The event is full of drag racing nostalgia and US 30 memorabilia. There is plenty of bench racing and reminiscing about the “good old days,” but racers are also encouraged to bring out their hot rods and have at it. The event featured everything from straight axle gassers and slingshots to the nostalgia nitro funny car of Kevin Lennon. There is no formal competition, but just a willingness by the racers to put on a good show complete with tire melting burnouts and bumper dragging wheelstands.
This year I was fortunate enough to attend on Saturday with my Dad who not only took photos while spectating at US 30 from 1967-1984, but also raced there. Also in attendance with us and along the wall with me and carrying his own camera was my son, Michael (three generations of Mike Sopko’s). The included images are some of the best moments we captured during this run what you brung and have fun event. Hopefully this event will continue and become a staple of the Midwestern Nostlagia Drag Racing scene.

Check out this cool Fiat that was part of the eclectic collection of race cars.
You know your nose is light when after lifting from a burnout the tires hook and pull a wheelie!
