Event number six of eight on the 2017 Mallory Print.com / Mears Mazda Volvo tour brought the SHRA Old School Bracket classes to North Star Dragway on Saturday, August 19th in Denton, Texas. Over sixty cars were on hand to participate in this event presented by Lenamond Auto Supply and Gary's Muffler Shop. Entering the event, points chase developments were heating up and by the end of the night things were really going to get shook up as the lead runners battle for precious points in their hunt for the season Championships.
In the Old School No-Electronics category, thirty five cars were in action and by the quarterfinal round all five remaining cars were in the SHRA points program and racking up round wins. Ronny Martin and Tyler Horne bowed out in the quarter finals leaving Michael Rhea, Jason Marshall and points leader Michael Graves still in the hunt. In the semis, Michael Rhea benefitted from the bye run with the best reaction time from the previous round. Meanwhile, Jason Marshall and Michael Graves took to the line ready to see who would advance to the money round. Marshall launched his Chevy Vega off the line with a .005 reaction time and his 6.04 on a 6.01 dial took out Graves' 6.49 break out on a 6.50 dial.
Marshall and Rhea rolled to the line ready to crown a winner, both racking up points on their march to the finals. As the ambers dropped, Marshall was -.012 and red lighted his chances away while Rhea clicked off a 5.81 on a 5.82 dial to win his first SHRA event of the season. Rhea jumped up to third in points behind Mike Labue, who are both hoping to close the gap on points leader Michael Graves with two events remaining.
