Report: SHRA Media / Photos: Steve Scott, Wes Ramsey, Chris Graves
The Southwest Heritage Racing Association's Little River Nostalgia Drags were in question as rains threatened the event, but it turned out to be relatively cool for late June in Temple and the track was dry and had bite come race time! A big turnout of nostalgia drag racers came out and once again the Little River Dragway was the site of some fantastic close drag racing - old school style!
- NOSTALGIA ELIMINATOR 1 -
The Alkydigger Nostalgia Eliminator 1 class had Lubbock's Andy Mears with a large lead in the Championship points coming into Temple, with several racers wanting to put a dent in that points lead. Tera Graves wheeling the Walden Power Equipment slingshot with Darrell Walden tuning wasn't playing around as they grabbed the Neil & Parks #1 qualifying bonus with their 4.67 blast in qualifying. Mears and Tera were on the same side of the ladder so a showdown was imminent.
Frisco, Texas runner Kent Carley took care of that with the Richard DeLaMatyr owned altered with tuning help from Guy Tipton as they took out Mears with a 4.66 blast in Round 2 and got the Bad Behaviour Bounty Bonus on Mears who won the last event in San Antonio. Tera disposed of a red-lighting Carley in the semis putting the 2014 Alkydigger NE1 Champ in her second final round of the year. Her consistent high 4.60 runs along with grabbing the Mears Mazda-Volvo Quick Reaction Time bonus proved they were for real. On the other side of the ladder, Tommy Drozd nailed the #2 qualifying position and like Tera had plans to put a dent in that Mears points lead. Drozd benefited from red lights and broke opponents along with a bye run but none the less his runs were at or just under the 4.65 index proving that he wasn't playing around either! His semi final round bye run of 4.66 gave him lane choice over Tera and this had shaped up into yet another fantastic final round battle in Alkydigger NE class racing! Drozd used a .0008 light and yet another outstanding run of 4.67 to take the Temple title back to Lake Dallas, Texas and with that puts the Drozd team in 2nd place in Alkydigger NE1 points, just 1 point behind Mears! Tera moved up from 5th to 3rd place and it is shaping up with three races remaining to be a 3 way battle for the championship in Alkydigger Nostalgia Eliminator 1!
