Burndown at Sundown
Route 66 Raceway June 2, 2015
By Dan Ricks
Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, IL held it’s annual Burndown at Sundown event in combination with the NHRA Lucas Oil Division 3 race. What a great event! It featured everything from class racing to jet cars, wheel standers, nitro, Harleys and snowmobiles. That’s right, 150 MPH Pro Stock snowmobiles.
For nostalgia fans there was plenty to get excited about, like the Top Dragster class. This class was dominated by rear engine dragsters, except for Elgin, IL’s Mark Krupa, with his beautiful 200 MPH front engine dragster. It was definitely a crowd pleaser!
The car I found myself going back to look at several times was Gary Norstmann’s 1961 Ford Falcon with a Ford 427 power plant. Gary is from Festus, MO and ran in the Super Street Class.
Dolton, IL’s Garrett Ghazzi brought back a lot of memories from days gone by with his red, white and blue painted 1969 AMX, running in the Super Stock Class.
On behalf of myself and Nostalgia Drag World magazine, I want to thank the staff at Route 66 Dragway for all of their hospitality. It was greatly appreciated!
