From a new management arrangement to new cars and new records, the 2014 season for Nostalgia Super Stock Inc. had more than enough action for both members and fans.
“This is my summary to the NSS Inc 2014 season,” said first-year president Rich Berlisk.
“We started out our year in April with the annual group meeting in Springfield, IL to conduct our yearly business. New member voting took place as well as election of officers. Rich Berlisk was elected president with Joe Zajac as vice president and Cheryl Zajac remained as financial secretary. Bob Wilkiewicz got the recording secretary post with John Grinwald, Spence Schreindl and Gene Devening all as board of directors. This makes for a very knowledgeable leadership group for their respective terms.
“We all enjoyed events with three at Great Lakes Dragaway followed by two at U.S. 36 Dragway Osborn,MO. Our adventures also included two at Central Illinois Raceway; one at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk OH; Bunker Hill, IN; Rolling Thunder in Pacific Junction, IA and Byron Raceway, Byron, IL. It was a very busy season for us.
“I personally made it to all but Norwalk for the Pontiac Nats as Joe was there to coordinate the event. My hot rod was down all season do to a manufacturer sending us parts that didn't work for my application and finally going to another to design and manufacture what we needed. Finally got it together in September and was able to get a weekend in at Great Lakes and suffered another set back. I'll be ready for ’15!’
This allowed me to be involved with coordinating the events along with Bob Wilkiewicz and also starting line duties. I got to see an awesome amount of great racing of NSS Inc from the best seat in the house, working the line!
John Grinwald, Watertown, WI 'gettin it on' in his 1965 Dodge altered wheelbase injected Hemi.
“I got to witness several pairs of cars all through the season that were "glued" together going down the track week after week. They were John Rousett vs. Doug Henderson and Bob Cattelino vs. Craig Pfohl, great job ! Also got to witness great eight second side-by-sides from Paul Habura, Larry Quinn, Bill White, Mike Singleton, Ernie Keppler, Mike Cicciarelli, Brad Shoemaker and John Grinwald, who fielded with three different hot rods.
“There were three drivers knocking on the door to the eights being Len Grimsley Jr , Joe Zajac and Spence Schreindl, who did an eight pass once. Some all-time bests were run by a few people. One that stands out was from one of our long-time members Larry Kaufman in his Pontiac.
“I also got to observe a rare identical 60-foot time right to the ten thousandth of a second and numerous runs separated by only a thousandth or two; Cattelino and Pfohl come to mind on this.
“Others that made our season successful were the following: Jimmy Brandon, Jeff Burris, Tom Cartwright, Dale Chenoweth, Gene Devening, Bob Durling, Gerry Gostenik, Dan Hradisky, Tom Keasler, Wayne Keimig, Keith Kleiner, Ken Kleiner, Dennis Sherer, and Peter Stamm.
Joe Zajac works the clutch for the hard launch on his 1963 Pontiac Catalina the "Rompin Redskin". Joe is from Burns Harbor, IN.
“Thanks also goes out to Larry Brennan the organization’s ‘starter’ for all his work on the line and special thanks to Bob Wilkiewicz and Joe Zajac for all their input and help. We could not be successful without all the above mentioned people, including our historian and Hall of Fame member, Dave Campbell. I'd like to thank all of you for making our 25th year a success. I also have to mention the women of our group for all the fine food and treats !!!
“Also on my thank you list are the tracks we visited this past season, Randy Henning and Marcel Kuper at Great Lakes Dragaway; Steve at Bunker Hill; Jeff Lasecke at Central Illinois; Mike Franks at U.S. 36; B.J. at Byron; Jim and Phil at Pacific Junction; Pete at the Pontiac Nationals at Summit. Our group enjoyed your hospitality.
One last "BIG" thanks I would like to extend to all the photographers making our articles complete. Ted Pappacena, Peter Ores and Dan Ricks your contributions were great!
One thing I forgot to mention is a "Super Big" thank you to the publisher of Nostalgia Drag World Rob Huckstadt for his support and great work on our articles and likewise to Bob Wilkiewicz for his excellent interviews and writing skills.
A special thanks to our sponsors; North Suburban Auto Parts, Strange Engineering, Prairieland Development, Almost N.O.S. R.B. Restorations, Kilpatrick Engine and Transmissions, Top Notch Vehicles, Watertown Body Shop, Grinwald Ford and Rush Performance Transmissions.
“For all our followers and readers, thanks for supporting us and please continue to do so as I view 2015, our 26th year to be an even more exciting season.”
