Shakespeare County Raceway 21st - 22nd June 2014
21st Anniversary Nostalgia Nationals
by Steve Weston
The eagerly anticipated 21st staging of the National Street Rod Associations Nostalgia Nationals at Shakespeare County Raceway in June marked the start of the three major nostalgia events held in the UK through the year.
Exactly what makes up a great drag racing event, be it weather, crowd, atmosphere, car turnout or excellent racing, I'm not sure, but most certainly all of these things came together on the 21st/22nd June. It may not have had temperatures on the scale of the recent MOPAR Mile High Nationals at Bandimere Speedway, but we had the UK equivalent.
With the close proximity of the Dragstalgia event to be held at Santa Pod Raceway in mid July, it was an ideal opportunity for many, including a number of European entries to either combine two events in one visit, or to test machinery to the benefit of the Nostalgia Nationals entry list.
The biggest entry of Supercharged Outlaws seen for quite some time assembled for the weekend with the welcome return of overseas visitors Jurgen Schoman's 'Master Of Desaster' Willys, Kirsten Van Crooenborgh's 'Suzy Q' Plymouth and Ramon van der weurf with the Wild'r at heart Nostalgia Funny Car plus the first runs for Deborah Laugher in a stunning supercharged Corvette added to a 20+ entry for the event. Add in US legend Rod Hynes as master of ceremonies/grand start marshal and a great Supercharged session was witnessed throughout the weekend. Mr Entertainment, Jurgen Schoman provided the usual excitement from the German team, I'm sure he must run a half mile to complete a quarter, although he did emerge relatively in one piece, just damage to the fender after brushing the wall. Unfortunately, similar damage was sustained to the Deborah Laugher car on its first run, which turned sharp left just after the start line, damaging the front end which finished her weekend.
The debut of the Deborah Laugher Corvette, fortunately repairable and no serious injuries.
Jurgen Schomen wild ride in 'Master of Desaster', damage to the front fender, but, back out on Sunday!
With a round of the Gasser Circus championship series at the event, a 16 car field was in attendance with the usual 'wheels up', smoking burnout action providing the crowd with several memorable passes.
Wheels up, tire smoking action from the Gasser Circus.
The Wildbunch and Outlaw Anglia's produced respectable fields of cars and some tremendous racing in their respective series rounds, for sure the Anglia's seem to be getting quicker and quicker with each round with more cars joining the 7sec club.
Outlaw Anglia and The Wildbunch provided some great moments at the event.
As always adding to the weekend is the 'Run What You Brung' element of the racing and, amongst the superbly presented cars, was, I believe, most certainly in recent times at Shakespeare County a car that nobody, including the commentary team could identify. It eventually came down to the owner 'white marking' the car and model on the rear window, but, very rare in the UK!
The car with no name......eventually the owner marked the window with make and model !
A rare sight in the UK.* *(the mystery car...........Dodge Lancer GT!)
One of my cars of the weekend, F series truck of Nick Davies (his other ride is the Havoc Fuel Altered).
A big mention must also go out to the 'Detroit Spinner' crew, who, leading up to the event had spent untold hours in the workshop, racing against time to make their debut appearance at the weekend. Several 'shakedown' passes made during both days and given time to sort the car, is going to be an excellent addition to the growing list of 'nostalgia' vehicles in the UK.
The first appearance of the newly restored 'Detroit Spinner'.
All in all a superb weekend of Nostalgia, as always big thanks to Shakespeare County, track, crew, drivers and all who made a great weekend happen, lets do it all again soon.
See you at The Hot Rod Drags!
