Animal's Stories cont...
by Animal Jim Feurer
I have a hole on the bottom of the Lakewood to monitor the wear and check the air gap. Luckily I had Jim Naramore who owned Jim's Racing Enterprises in East Peoria helping me out as a sponsor with the clutch parts.
As for the clutch linkage, I had modified the geometry to create minimum pedal travel and also employed a Mr. Gasket Pedal Stop. That modification made the disc release quicker to aid my fluid, automatic-sounding powershifts. If you ever saw “Big” run, you know what I mean. Folks who were not familiar with The Big Animal, when they’d walk over and look in, would remark, “My God, it’s a manual 4-speed! Sounds like an automatic!" I heard that said several times.
For the rear, I have Zeke's brand-new, spare Strange Pro nodular 3rd member with 35-spline spool. Need to change the 4:11 to a 5:13 gear. I also have to put my 35-spline Strange Axles back in. (Anyone need a new big pinion 4:11?) During the latter years, to make moving “Big A” easier, I had removed the 35-spline spool and axles and installed a stock, open 28-spline rear end with stock 28-spline axles in the rear 9" housing.
Going back to my racing at Oswego. I just ran for trophies for a while. When Run Tuff started in 1971 I was one of the first. When all was said and done, by the end of 1976 I had won more than my share of Run Tuff events, including three Operation Drag Racer events. And I was Oswego RTE Champion in 1973 and 1974. In 1976 I was already racing my Pinto Pro Stock car at select events around the United States, but would race The Big Animal at Oswego in RTE in between.
Big Animal and Doc Smith's 57 Pont. Gasser (The Joker) together. Doc's Pontiac will be Big Animal's match partner.
Not to be redundant, but those Oswego days are as important memories to me as winning Pro Stock, Pro Mod national events and championships. I wonder if professional ball players feel the same way about their early days? I would say yes, especially if they heard Madonna sing her "Playground” song!
I will be telling more stories. From my street racing to Pro Modified. Remember the past was just minutes ago. Is that Nostalgia? It is if you had a couple Beef Eater dirty Martinis. But shit! None for me tonight. I have a blood test tomorrow! I know…to make up for tonight, I'll have twice as many tomorrow night! LOL!!
