1st Annual 808 Fuel Nostalgia Drag Race
by Michael Baba Balbarino
On the Big Island of Hawaii, in the sleepy little town of Hilo, nostalgia drag racing is alive and well. 808fuel.com in conjunction with the Hawaii Drag Racing League put on the first ever in the State of Hawaii nostalgia drag race. November 15 & 16 went down in Hawaii drag racing history with the 1st Annual 808fuel.com Nostalgia Drags. Racers from around the island came to compete and spectators from across the state came to witness history being made on the Hilo dragstrip.
One of the oldest racers to come out was 81 year old Chris Estrada who races his roadster "Old Timer". Mr Estrada has been racing since the 1970's and what makes him so special, is that Mr. Estrada lost one of his arms. He steers, shifts, and wrenches his own car with one arm, and most of all, he's a very humble man. He may not be the fastest car out there, but he shows others that you can't let a handicap hamper you from your passion.
If I had to give an award to someone who had the most fun, that award would go to my friend Karl Kekela Sr., Karl races his "MIND BENDER" 55 Chevy that was a terror back in the 70's at the old Kona dragstrip. Once he got word of the nostalgia drags coming up, he worked non stop for weeks getting the "MIND BENDER" back together for dragstrip action again.
The wheelie award would have to go to another one of my friends, Darren Savella. Darren drives a street driven Chevy II wagon gasser, powered by a small block Chevy, 4 speed trans, and a straight axle front end. His front tires has been seen above the guardrail on numerous occasions.
If you're planning a vacation to Hawaii next year, plan on coming to the 2nd Annual 808fuel.com Nostalgia Drags which will be bigger and badder than the first. You can find all the motorsports action in the State of Hawaii on 808fuel.com.
