Day 1 at the CHRR. Beautiful day, and great air - some serious numbers on the board in multiple classes. In Q1 of top fuel, Bartone lays down a 5.63 at 247.84 mph. Martin Libhart photo.
Plenty of NOSTALGIA on day 1 at CHRR 2014
This is the Tony Nancy car currently owned by John Neas (pictured with the car) of Tulsa, OK. Martin’s friend, Ross Howard, owns the beautiful push car – a 1966 Dodge Coronet wagon. Ross brought the wagon all the way from Oklahoma City to push this great FED.
Tony Nancy outran “hand grenade” Harry Hibler in this car to win the 1970 March Meet, becoming the last front-engine dragster to win a U.S. Gas & Fuel Championship. And the best news of all: Harry Hibler will be on hand to cackle the car in the cacklefest Saturday night. This IS nostalgia!!!

OPENING DAY OF THE CALIFORNIA HOT ROD REUNION PRESENTED BY
AUTOMOBILE CLUB OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA THUNDERS INTO BAKERSFIELD
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The opening day of the 23rd annual California Hot Rod Reunion presented by Automobile Club of Southern California®, roared to life under blue California skies on Friday. Racers and spectators alike streamed into the event when the gates opened on the first day of the three day event.
When entering the reunion those in attendance were welcomed by finest classic cars and customs from across the west as they were proudly on display at the sprawling facility. All the cars were restored to their former glory and fans of the automobile culture were able to relive the cars of their youth. A sprawling sweep meet, vendor area and food vendors were also at the event adding to the festival atmosphere.
Nostalgia quarter mile racing was also on the docket for the day as the sounds of American muscle filled the sky. Tony Bartone, who has secured the Nostalgia Top Fuel season title, looks to continue his dominance of the category during the final NHRA Hot Rod Heritage Racing Series event of the season. Bartone, who has won all the events thus far this season, leads the Top Fuel field after the first qualifying session with a pass of 5.635 seconds at 247.84 mph. Mark Sanders lead the Nostalgia Funny Car field with his pass of 5.724 at 245.23. Top Fuel and Funny Car will have one more qualifying session on Saturday prior to the start of eliminations.
The evening events concluded at the Double Tree hotel in Bakersfield with the California Hot Rod Reunion Honoree Reception. After recognizing the honorees, the festivities moved outside under the stars with hot rods and vintage race cars on display as well as a Cacklefest with a selection of the vehicles.
“This was a fantastic start of the California Hot Rod Reunion presented by Automobile Club of Southern California,” said Larry Fisher, executive director of the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum. “California is the birthplace of the hot rod culture and it is great to see some many fans celebrate the rich history of our sport.”
The California Hot Rod Reunion presented by Automobile Club of Southern California returns on Saturday with on track action starting at 8 a.m. and nitro qualifying starting at noon with Nostalgia Top Fuel followed by Nostalgia Funny Car. Eliminations in both categories will begin on Saturday starting at 3:30 p.m. with Top Fuel taking to the track first.
The history makers of the sport will be honored during the course of the day on Saturday in many functions including the honoree presentation and twilight memorial at 5:30 p.m. on the starting line. Grand Marshall Mike Dunn and honoree’s Bob Brooks, brothers Ed and Roy Cortopassi, Doug Butler, Hugh Tucker, Dennis Varni and Sid Waterman will all be honored during the presentation.
The famous Cacklefest® will end the evenings events on Saturday as the entire track will be home to classic Nitro burning dragsters of days past as they roar to life and fill the night air with the sound of high-powered motors in full song.
On Sunday, Oct. 19th, the California Hot Rod Reunion presented by Automobile Club of Southern California concludes with crowning champions in each of the racing categories. Pre-race ceremonies begin at 10:45 a.m. followed by a self-start Cacklefest® display and the continuation of eliminations in each of the categories.
