A Diamond In The Rough

Beacon Dragway is a new track located just outside Paducah, Kentucky. In the first year of operation under new ownership, Beacon is truly a beautiful and wellmanaged 1/8-mile facility. Originally the McCracken County Dragstrip in the 1960's, it was converted to a private airport and continued to operate as such until becoming the new Beacon Dragway. The Paducah International Raceway (owned by Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Kenny Schrader, and Tony Stewart) is located adjacent to this facility. Beacon Dragway features new lighting, new paving, state of the art timing system, extensive parking with pit spot rentals, restaurant, beer garden, VIP suites, and a nice RV campground approximately 1/4-mile down the road.
I had the opportunity to cover their Nostalgia Day on September 21st, and I was not disappointed! Featured groups at this event were the GEEZER GASSERS and the Dixie DoorSlammers, along with a nice array of cars from the Nostalgia Super Stock Series.
Jeff Bruhn is the track manager, and was burning the candle at both ends this weekend. No task was too big or too small for Jeff, and everyone appreciated the work of the entire Beacon staff. After a night of heavy rain, the track was fully prepped and the pits were full by late morning on Saturday. Staging lane management was excellent, and classes were called to the lanes at regular intervals in order to keep the program moving.
The GEEZER GASSERS were a crowd favorite, with plenty of smoky burnouts, wheels-up launches, and great side-by-side racing. Beacon has already invited the group to return October 5th for their Night of Fire event. Not to be outdone, the Dixie DoorSlammers had a nice group of cars on hand to also show the crowd some good heads-up drag racing.
