For the Hot Rod enthusiast in Southern California, nothing can be finer than Drag Racing on a warm summer’s evening… and on August 24, 2013 there was no better place to be in the San Diego area than the sacred grounds of the Barona Drag Strip for the Crower Cavalcade, Match Race Madness event! With their “Run what you brung” charter, it was a great evening of “old-school” Drag Racing where there was something for everyone. In the “Match Race Madness” element of the show, the cars entered into a “2-out-of-3, heads-up, winner-takes-all” show down.
Also in attendance for the Crower Cavalcade event was three classic nitro slingshots from the Golden Era of Drag Racing”. Center-stage was Tommy Allen’s “Trick Car”, Bobby Hansen’s “Wynn’s Spoiler” and Jay Carpenter’s “Wood Tribute Car”. The show officially got underway at 03:00 PM; however the first mag clicked to kick off round one of the “cackle burn-out” was just before seven bells that evening. One by one each car fired up, rolled into the bleach box, cracked the throttle and blazed the hides past the tree. From there they motored down the Barona strip and hung their laundry.
As the final AA/FD went silent the crowd extended their very enthusiastic appreciation to the car owners, drivers and crew members alike. With their genetic blueprint of raw horsepower and the passage of time, each digger carefully pealed back their unique, underlying history that’s deeply etched within our consciousness. In doing so they challenged us to investigate the internal essence that bonds us nitro-junkies together!
