2nd ANNUAL TUCSON DRAGWAY REUNION
May 18, 2013 – Tucson, AZ
by Darrell and Pam Conrad
The 2nd Annual Tucson Dragway Reunion was specifically designed to be a laid back, low-key affair where racers, their families, friends, fans and spectators alike could share the beauty and magic of yesteryear in so many different ways. The event featured many unique attractions such as 1/8-mile, flag start drag racing (for any pre-1973 car, at various intervals throughout the reunion); and in the pits there was a vast collection of customs, hot rods, street rods, funny cars, gassers, jet cars and nitro cackle cars… about 200 in total. The reunion also conducted the 2013 “Arizona Drag Racing Hall of Fame” inductions, and provided a vendor/swap-meet area.
Friday night got underway with a free to the public “meet & greet” that gave birth to some of the best bench racing ever! Throughout the evening in the “Nitro-Mall,” the nitro gulping, fire belching, ground pounding legends from the “golden era” of drag racing fired up their motors and thrilled the curious onlookers like never before! It was a three-hour party that will be talked about for a long time!
Saturday night’s venue hosted the “Western Fuel Altered Nationals” as well as an opportunity for the cackle cars to make a pass down the 1320! The show was also opened up to any Nostalgia Top Fuel and Nostalgia Funny Cars to a test-n-tune session. The grandstands were packed to capacity as were the pits; many old friendships were reunited and new ones were started.
What all started with a dream inside Dan Owen’s head a few years ago has now grown into an amazing display of hot rod magic and drag racing passion! There were cars from all over the Southwestern USA; states like Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico and Texas just to name a few. The price of admission was the best $10 anyone had ever spent - not only did it buy you a night of thrills and chills, but all the profits were donated to the Humane Society to support their efforts in a way that only drag racers can do!
The event was presented by the “Standard 1320” group; and in honor of the pioneer’s of the sport they provided these legends with a special seating area near the tower in which they were able to sit right in the center of all the action! Special thanks go out to Bob and Ginger Snyder and Mike Bieke for their outstanding efforts in capturing the magic through their camera lens! EVENT PHOTOS ON FOLLOWING PAGES
