Tony Lombardi At The NHRA National Hot Rod Reunion
Bowling Green, KY 2015
By Mike Sopko Jr.
Editors note: We will have coverage of the NHRA National Hot Rod Reunion in our August issue.
Tony Lombardi, a competitor in the 7.0 class experienced disaster during Friday's first qualifying session. After several successful seasons in his supercharged Oldsmobile Rocket powered dragster Lombardi had a new chassis built this year. In the week leading up to the event Lombardi thrashed to complete the car and in fact took delivery of the freshly painted body panels at the track. On the new car's maiden voyage it briefly carried the wheels and then sharply hooked left crossing the center line and passing behind the dragster of John Slagle. The car continued in that direction until it made contact with the wall which catapulted the car sideways into the car. The car crashed down to the surface on it's side and then eventually ended back up on all four wheels. The chassis was heavily damaged, but fortunately Lombardi emerged from the vehicle unhurt. In speaking with Lombardi he plans to front half the chassis and be back in competition soon.
