6-1-15 Tomorrow , June 2nd. Linda Lou and I are leaving for our cabin up near Lac Du Flambeau , Wisconsin.
On June 5th. we will celebrate our 50th. wedding anniversary. Another couple will join us at our cabin on Lake Crawling Stone. Charlie and Carol Swanson, from Oglesby, IL. will be the couple. They stood up for us June 5th., 1965 when Linda and I married.
June 6th. is the Swanson's 51st. Wedding anniversary. At that time the Swanson's married, in 1964, I was still going steady with Uncle Sam and an M-14 rifle.
My daughter Jackie Fennell, and her husband Doug Fennell, will be at the cabin to take us on a leisurely pontoon boat cruise of our vast 7 lake chain on Saturday. We will drink some Miller light and perhaps fish a bit. Afterwards Doug will cook us all a 50/51 wedding anniversary gourmet meal on the grill, including the area's famous "brats".
I met my Linda Lou in Sept of 1964. Right after I mustered out of Active US Army. She was a first year teacher at Spring Valley, Il., 5 miles from my hometown Peru, Il. It was instant karma. At Christmas we were engaged. Early June, 1965, school got out. Linda talked about going home, with her folks in Edelstein, IL near Peoria for the summer. I said, " No way! lets just get married now".
So for two days we scurried for license and blood tests. On Sat. June 5th. I worked till noon at Car Town, Linda went that morning for interview and landed a better teaching position at Utica , IL. 6 miles from Peru.
At 1 PM we got married by an inebriated JP at the LaSalle, Il. Courthouse. We four, The Swanson's and the Feurer's then went to Tammy's Steak house, one of our favorite places, south of Tonica, IL. 10 miles from LaSalle /Peru on SR 51. We had our intimate wedding afternoon dinner, and Charlie and I a toasted with Crown Royal.
Afterwards Linda and I went to tell my parents in Peru. They were thrilled. Then we jumped in my Black 63 Mercury R code 427. We headed north on 51, thinking about going to the Wisconsin Dells. We only got 15 miles. Just on north end of Mendota, IL. we checked into the Ma and Pa Kishwaukee Motel. It was only about 4 PM. The sun shining bright.
Like Johnny Cash and June Carter,
"We got married in a Fever--Hotter Than a Pepper Sprout"! LOL
February 25th. 1966--our daughter Jackie was born.
